Frederick Douglass’s mother was a slave to Captain Anthony who was rumored to have sired Frederick. It was the practice of white masters to sexually exploit the female slaves and the children born out of this follow the condition of their mothers. By this cunning arrangement, the slaveholder sustains to his slaves the double relation of master and father.

It was a common custom in those parts to part these children from their mothers at a very early age, by selling the mothers off to some other farm and placing the child in the cure of an old woman too old for field labor. Douglass’s mother was hired by a Mr. Stewart, who lived about twelve miles from his place. She worked as a field hand and she made her journeys to see her son in the night after the day’s work, traveling on foot. Whipping was the penalty for not being in the field at sunrise and so, she could spend only very little time with her son and had to return. Not much communication ever took place between them. She died when he was about seven.

She underwent all these hardships just to spend a few hours once in a while with her son, putting him to sleep and just lying next to him. She could not enjoy caring for him, or nursing him, or watch him grow. This shows a mother’s deep love for her child, which they had no means to express otherwise, under such terrible conditions.
Comment on the collective money madness as described in the poem ‘Money Madness’.
The poem Money Madness by D.H. Lawrence focuses on how a man becomes more materialistic and loses the values and sentiments in society. He respects money over relationships. Society goes on to measure a man in Venus of money. A man who does not have money does not get respect from society and those who have money get respect and are obeyed by all. So to get all these social statuses, the man gives much importance to money and he never helps other fellow beings who may be in difficulties.

The poet says that man has this money madness and it is widely spread among men. Fie affirms that if society goes behind money, individuals to goes behind the same. He confirms that no man gives a pound without pain and no man gives ten pounds without trembling, and the man loses his generosity. Man makes money. but money makes man and many things. So, the man fears more and tries to accumulate it and respects it instead of other men. The poet also warns that money-less people should not be treated with neglect and should not be treated based on status.

The poet fears for mankind that if it measures another man only in terms of money, there would be no future for human relationships. If people do not regain sanity about money. certainly, money has got men down to become its slaves. So. the poet offers a genuine solution that bread shoúld be free, shelter should be free and fire should be free to all the people in the world.

In the overall view of the poem, the poet worries about man’s greed for money and offers a better solution for a better tomorrow.
Nicola and Jacopo bring nobility to human life. Explain.
War is the element of mass destruction and history has plenty of examples of total annihilation of cities and populations. But. it can only destroy physical structures like houses. buildings and of course humans, It can never crush the spirit of the survivors, as in the case of the boys, Jacopo and Nicola.

Many years ago in a small Indian village, a farmer had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to the village moneylender. The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the farmer’s beautiful daughter. So he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgo the farmer’s debt if he could marry the farmer’s daughter.

Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the cunning moneylender suggested that they let providence decide the matter.

He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money bag. Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her father’s debt would be written off. If she picked the white pebble she need not marry him and her father’s debt would still be written off. But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail. They were standing on a pebble-strewn path in the farmer’s field.

As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles. The girl put her hand into the money bag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles.

“Oh, how clumsy of me,” she said. “But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked. “

Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed that she had picked the white one. And since the moneylender dared not admit his dishonesty; the girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely advantageous one.
