कृष्णशास्त्रीमहोदयः Summary in English

Introduction: The culture of Karnataka is worthy of being followed. Kannada is a very sweet language. Many famous personalities like B.M. Shri., D.V.G., Shivarama Karanth, Bendre, Gokak, Maasti, Kuvempu, A.R. Krishna Sastri dedicated their lives to protect the land and culture of Karnataka. A brief introduction to the life of A.R. Krishna Sastri is given in this chapter.

Summary:

A.R. Krishna Sastri is a shining star among the Sanskrit and Kannada poets of the 20th century. He is known to the Kannada world through his works ‘Vachana Bharata’ and ‘Kathamruta’. His lifestory is a guide to us.

Childhood: Krishna Sastri was born on 12 August 1890. His father was Ambale Ramakrishna Sastri and mother was Shankaramma. He learnt Sanskrit from his father from his childhood. He used to go to school with his father. He learnt by heart Sanskrit slokas, Amarakosha and Panini’s grammar. He studied at Royal school and Wesleyan Mission High School and Maharaja College in Mysore. In Maharaja College, he was the student of famous personalities like

Prof. M. Hiriyanna, Prof. B.M. Shri., Kankanahalli Varadacharya and others. His love for Sanskrit is revealed in his following speech.

Love for Sanskrit: “Sanskrit and the treatises propounded in Sanskrit are the wealth we have inherited from our ancestors. We should not let that get destroyed. Now-a-days we look up to the western countries for everything. If we depend on the western countries even for Sanskrit, then it is definitely the downfall of our country. If the study of Sanskrit is hampered, then it is like moving a child away from its mother’s breast.” It was his strong conviction that every student who studies other languages should compulsorily study Sanskrit. He was a great teacher. Sastri would always prepare well for his classes. His way of teaching attracted the students towards him. D.V.G. used to praise the teaching method of Sri. Sastri.

Affection for Students: He was very fond of his students. He used to help them in every way. He used to encourage them to study.

Once, one of Sastri’s students was in financial difficulty during his college days. He was not able to pay the exam fee and decided not to come to college. After four-five days Sastri came to know about his problem. He asked one of the students, Krishna Rao, to bring the boy to college. When he came to the college Sastri gave him a cheque from his own pocket and encouraged him to study well. Thus Sastri showed his kindness.

Rashtrakavi Kuvempu was his student. He recognized the talent in Kuvempu and called him ‘Varakavi’. Krishna Sastri wanted to translate the book ‘Dvanyaloka’ of Anandavardhan to Kannada. When he came to know that his student Dr. K. Krishna Moorthy had already taken up translation of the book, he not only encouraged him but also wrote the foreword to the book.

Contributions to Sanskrit and Kannada languages: Krishna Sastri was the founder of ‘Karnataka Sangha’. He also started a magazine called ‘Prabhuddha Karnataka’. He was a member of the committee for compilation of the English-kannada dictionary. He was the editor of the newspaper published by Kannada Sahitya Parishat. He has written many books, like ‘Ramakrishna Paramahamsa Charita’, ‘Bhasa Kavi’, ‘Samskrita Natakam’ etc. His book ‘Bankim Chandra’ won the Central Sahitya Akademi award.

Message for Students: He used to tell his students, “We are not satviks. We have Tamasa character. We don’t have patience. We are not brave. We are cowards. We don’t need political war. In the battle of life we need courage, patience and self-respect. So get up. Be enlightened. Strive till you reach your goal. Listen to stories of heroes to fill your mind with enthusiasm. Have respect for your country and your people. Study is the penance for a student. Don’t be lazy, read our history. Think about the progress of our country. Be united.”

Let this message encourage us all.
