Introduction: In Sanskrit literature poems are in majority. A poem is an extraordinary work of a poet. There are two major categories – Audio and Visual. Visual is of two types namely Roopaka and Upa-roopaka. Roopaka can be of ten different types and Upa-roopaka can be of eighteen different types. Dr. K. Nagarajan has written a Roopaka called ‘Guru Shapam’ which has mainly the theme of bravery. This lesson ‘Vidhivilasitam’ is taken from the first Act of this Roopaka.
(Prelude: The brave and benevolent Karna served his Guru honestly and attained the Bhargavaastra. Then Guru Parashurama came to know that Karna was the son of a soothe (charioteer) and cursed him. After Karna begged for forgiveness, Parashurama showed mercy on Karna and soothed him.) Characters:
Guru – Parashurama Karna – Radheya.
Summary:
(Parashurama is followed by Karna in the hermitage) Guru: “Karna, your education is complete. Now you can go wherever you want.”
Karna : “I’m sad for the same reason. I’m worried that now I have to leave you. I have no idea how I can pay you for the education you have given me. A Guru like you is very rare. It was my fortune that I got your fellowship.”
Guru : “It is my fortune too. I have taught thousands of students but I never had a student like you. So I will teach you the secret of Astrayoga. Concentrate. Are you fasting as I instructed you?”
Karna : “Yes. I have done all the things you instructed me to do.”
Guru : “Then listen. (he utters the purport of the mantra into the right ear of Karna). Now open your eyes.”
Karna : (Having opened his eyes) “Master!! Wonderful! Wonderful!
Guru : “It is the effect of the astra. That’s why it is called Bhargavaastra. Even Gods are scared of this astra. This is the last stage of your education. You will do well, better than me.” Karna : (with choked voice, saluting with gratitude)
“You have shown great kindness to this orphan. Definitely I am on the top of the list of the fortunate. Please tell me how I can pay you? (Falls to his feet)
Guru : (Raising his disciple) “Dear child, tell me. What is the use of your payment to me who lives in a forest detached from everything? If you have decided to pay me, listen to this.” If you kill all the arrogant kings with the art of missiles taught by me to you, that itself is the fees you may pay me. (1)
Karna : Master, I will always follow your orders. (Salutes again and again)
Guru : “Dear, you can depart from here now. But remember never leave the path of truth. May god bless you.”
Karna : (Having stood up) “Master I vow that I will do that always. Your blessings are my armour.
(looking around, to himself) I am unable to leave you or this place now. I will stay here for a few more days and then leave.”
“How beautiful this Gurukul is! Since I was busy studying archery I didn’t notice it at all. This place is filled with the presence of Veda Saraswathi. This place is decorated with innocence. There is no unhappiness or impurity. It is full of students who are humble and who have no evil and whose virtues delight the entire world.” (2)
Seeing the teacher sleeping he moves towards him, sits on the ground and places the head of the teacher on his lap.
“It is fortunate that I got this opportunity before going out. Nothing should occupy me but the service of the master.” (3)
(Then, an insect begins to eat into the flesh from Karna’s thigh. The touch of the warm blood awakens Parashurama.)
Guru : “Karna, tell me, whose blood is this? How has it come here? How come my head is on your lap? (with anger) Tell me the truth. Why did you come back to the ashram?”
Karna : “Acharya I will tell you what happened. You should forgive my mistake.”
“This is an insect called Vajra. This insect was mercilessly biting my thigh. I tolerated the unbearable pain of this insect-eating my flesh and drinking my blood. Had I moved, your sleep would have been disturbed. So I endured the pain with patience.” (4)
Guru : (Angrily) “Karna, what have you done? Your patience is unlimited. A normal human being cannot bear this pain even for a moment.”
Karna : “Whatever I said is the truth. Not a single word is a lie.”
Guru : (Angrily) “I don’t believe this. You appear to be a liar.”
Karna : “Master I haven’t done anything that is against Dharma. You should show mercy on me and forgive me.”
Guru : (with immense anger) “You wicked! A person who is truthful by nature cannot tolerate such pain even for a second. I taught you all knowledge without much thinking. My oath is broken. You have cheated me. All my knowledge is given to an unworthy person. (with eyes red with anger) Tell me the truth.”
Karna : (Trembling with fear) “Master, by birth I am the son of a sootha (charioteer). It was god’s wish that I take birth in that family. I had a very ardent wish to get the knowledge of astras. That’s why I came to you and learnt it from you. There was no other motive.”
Guru : “This might also be a lie. Get out of my sight.”
Karna : (with folded hands) “Master, you should pardon me.”
Guru : (Smiling) “You are a liar. You should be punished. Karna, you lied to me. So I curse you. Listen carefully.”
“While you are using your astra, if you get the feeling of being a sootha, then all your astras will be of no use. Now get out of here. You should suffer for the sins you have committed.” (5)
(Karna falls at the feet of his teacher with fear and grief and swoons. Regaining consciousness, he cries like a child.)
(Lifting up Karna who had fallen) “Now calm down Karna. Calm down. I can’t reverse my curse. The fate is very strong. In spite of all sorrows let your name be famous. Donate liberally to the poor. Be a good person. Never lie. Now go.”
Karna : “Master, I am blessed. Let your blessings make me sacred. Now I will go, being less fortune.” (Falls at his feet and exits)
Guru : (Gazing at Karna, with compassion and affection) “Alas! Fate!”
“Being honourable and of noble character, Karna became my favourite student. But, having uttered a lie, he is reduced to a pitiable condition due to the curse.” (6)
[Exits with a heavy heart.]
