Write the summary of the poem “Autumn Song”
Answer:
The poet Dr. Sarojini Naidu describes the Autumn season poetically. Autumn is the season which comes just before the winter season and at the end of the summer season. It is a season when cold winds start blowing.

‘Autumn’ in this poem means that we should never look back into our past life and we should make use of our present life. It is wonderfully written from the view of a human-being in the autumn of his / her life. It describes a situation where people wonder why they have outlived their dreams. In this poem Sarojini Naidu has used lyrical language and simple end rhymes to parallel personal lonelines and loss with the beautiful fragility of autumn. As we know autumn is a beautiful season which everyone admires. Naidu has explained the view, the nature of the feelings, what she is able to hear and has described it wonderfully. She is trying to show that she is sad but then too her surroundings are so beautiful and nice.

In the poem she picturizes a day in the season of autumn very poetically. The trees are swaying in the strong winds of autumn and the leaves are rattling. In the sky the clouds are floating flatteringly. The air is cold because of the windy breeze. As the winter season is approaching, the mornings are foggy. The gardens are wet because of thg rains, the previous night. She describes the sun in the sky as it rises in morning. At dawn the sun is red and in the mornings it appears orange and at noon it is yellow in the colour. This is autumn.

As she had lost a near and dear relative, i.e. her husband, her heart is full of sorrow. But the beauty of autumn brings joy to her sorrowful heart. She is in her old age, the autumn of her life, she compares her old age to the sun setting behind the clouds, beaming golden light in glittering bundles. The fair and frail leaves on the trees are fluttering in the wind just like the poet, in her oldage. Her heart is tofmented wildly. Because her husband has left her alone and passed away. She compares her thoughts to the wild wind that is blowing the clouds. She hears a voice calling to her, to her heart, in the Voice of the wind. She is weary, sad, and alone. The dreams in her heart have gone, just like the fluttering leaves blown away in the strong wind. She questions and ponders, that, when her loved one has gone, “Why she should stay behind?” But we should not look back into our life and go forward and enjoy it.

Write the substance of the poem
“Prayer for Dumb Creatures”.
Answer:
This poem ‘Prayer for Dumb creatures’ is written by G.E.Goodrich. In this poem the poet’s compassion and kindness to dumb creatures is expressed in a very poetic manner. He prays to the God Almighty who makes the earth, sea and sky. As God is the Lord and king of his own creation. He describes God’s work and praises him as the creator of the stars. He prays to the Almighty to bless the Dumb creatures who are in his care and pleads God to hear their voiceless prayer.

The humble creatures are God’s creations who live and die like us, human beings. He questions the Almighty how can human beings deny the rights of these dumb humble creatures, because God’s seal of love is also laid on them. He pleads God to teach us to hear their plea, just as God hears our prayers when we pray to God.

In this poem the poet asks all human beings to be kind and compassionate to even dumb creatures like cats, dogs, cow etc.

Question 26.
Write the brief message of the poem
“Faithful Friend”
Answer:
The poem ‘Faithful friends’ is written by an unknown poet. In the poem, the poet brings out the difference between faithful friends and unfaithful friends.

He explains that a friend who praises us will not be a friend in our difficulties. The wind can blow easily, and words can also come from our mouths easily, but faithful friends are very hard to find.

If you have a lot of money to spend, every one will be your friend but once all the money is spent, nobody will give you the money to spend.

If one is rich and has money to spend in a wasteful manner, everybody will come to visit him. And if one is inclined to vices bad habits, like gambling, smoking, drinking alchohol etc these friends will quickly persuade him to do all the wrong things. The person will be popular among his friends because he has the money to spend on bad habits.

But once the fortune has been spent and he can’t spend any more money on his friends, then suddenly all his friend will desert him. He will become friendless and un-popular. Nobody will want to become his friend.

So we have to be aware of these ‘fair weather friends’. Only a person who helps us in our difficulties is a true friend. A friend should guide us to lead a good life.
